Whoever came up with this design should be severely punished. But apparently there are rational explanations for the appearance of this monstrosity . . .
But the final appearance is really based on a previously existing trophy . . . The LOU GRANT TROPHY . . .

With the expansion of Big Ten conference, this will be the last year for the Land Grant trophy. What will become of it? My suggestion is to donate it to the Tom Bowl Museum http://tombowl.com/. This would provide a neutral location where the trophy could be displayed for all to see. It would also free up a lot of storage space at a college facility.
