Good Defense

As the shit-head Buckeye fan behind me said last night . . . that's not a penalty.  It's good defense!

Are choke holds now allowed in the Big Ten?  Is this part of the NCAA sanctions . . . they limit our scholarships AND the number of flags that can be thrown against our opponents?

Others Doubt Buckeyes Perfect

Several weeks ago, Dick sent a letter into my local paper claiming how special the Columbus experience was and how everyone he talked to complained about coming to Beaver Stadium.  He was puzzled at Nittany Lion fans basking in the light of Ohio State's fall from grace in the eyes of the NCAA.

In that letter, he said, and I quote, "You never read stories of Penn State fans coming to Columbus and being abused, verbally and physically, so I just do not get it."

Well, Dick.  Now you can get it.

In last Sunday's Altoona Mirror, two fans wrote in about their special experiences at the Shoe.
Finally - unlike Rich Foust from Troy, Ohio, and David Winters of Altoona - someone from Ohio State's trustees, Terry Jurgen, saw and admitted guilt and troubles in Ohio State's value systems.

Indeed, all sports fans should re-evaluate their priorities of intercollegiate competition.
Foust, in the spirit of Johnnie Cochran, chooses to blame Penn State fans and Penn State for coach Tressel cheating and lying about it. Yes, it's like blaming Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson for O.J. Simpson's heinous actions.

As far as abuse, Ohio State is the top venue in the Big Ten for drunkenness, verbal abuse and vulgarity. I've quit going to Columbus for games because of the extreme vulgarity of the Buckeye fans. I've been there, seen it, heard it and my nephew and his wife and 6-month-old daughter were sworn at and abused verbally at last year's game at Columbus.

. . .

In reply to the letter recently by Rich Foust of Troy, Ohio, the man needs to get his head out of the sand.

I am a Penn State season-ticket holder since 1966, been to nearly 400 games all over the country along with 20 bowl games (all the major ones). I have been to every Big Ten Stadium, and when the question, "who do you dislike most, for whatever reason?" comes up, the answer is always Ohio State.

Why? The answer is almost always treatment of visitors by the fans and the university itself (lousy seats). Even Indiana, which is not a football school, doesn't like the Buckeyes. That is bad.

My wife and I went to Penn State's first three games at Ohio State and because of the taunting and foul language directed at us, we swore we would never go back - and we haven't.
Thank you Ed and Lloyd.

But I suspect Dick has an excuse for that too.

Say Goodnight, Dick.

He Just Doesn't Get It

My good ol' Buckeye buddy is baaack!

Dick sent a letter into my hometown paper, the Altoona Mirror:
Resentment puzzling
Reading different comments from Pennsylvania people - writers, fans, etc. - regarding Ohio State and the Terrelle Pryor situation, it's obvious once again nothing gives PA people greater delight than to gloat over another program's misfortunes.

My question is why? We're all in same conference. Is it because Ohio State beats PSU 75 percent of the time?

You never read stories of Penn State fans coming to Columbus and being abused, verbally and physically, so I just do not get it.

I have friends from Lewisburg who come to Columbus to the game and remark that they've never been treated better. I've read comments from other schools' fans who say they will never return to Beaver Stadium again because of the rude, crude fans, not to mention incidents of visiting bands being tormented.
I'm not defending Jim Tressel because I've never been a fan of his, but to kick your heels and gloat and be so happy because of someone else's troubles, I don't get it.

Rich Foust
Troy, Ohio
My question is WHY?

Why does this man care what the "Pennsylvania people" think?  He lives in Troy, Ohio and also has a home in California.  He grew up in Lewisburg, yet finds it necessary to write in to Pennsylvania sports venues like the Altoona Mirror and PennLive with his derogatory accusations . . .rude, crude fans that throw piss on other bands.  It really does start to get old.  And now it bothers him that some of us are gloating about Ohio State's troubles?  Methinks the man is obsessed, although I have been obsessed ever since his complaints got me fired by PennLive.  But I have a reason . . .

What does he possibly gain by writing these letters to newspapers in the heart of Penn State country?  What does he expect?  We're going to read his pearls of wisdom and change our ways?  I have never gone on some other teams messageboard and flamed the fanbase.  The only opposing fan I have ever dealt harshly with is Mr Buckeye himself, and he couldn't handle the truth.  He went crying to the higher-ups and demanded my head on a platter.  If you don't want to hear the answer to the question, don't ask it in the first place.

Not everyone is gloating over Ohio State's situation.  My fellow blogger Carolyn Todd wishes nothing but the best for the Scarlet and Gray.

In answering his own befuddled question, he muses that we are all in the same conference.  Has anyone read Stephen King's Under the Dome . . .'Just a small town, baby, and we all support the team.'  If you haven't read the book, the implication is lost here.

What does O$U being in the Big Ten have to do with what's happening?  Is it good for the conference that Ohio State cheats?  Would it be better for our conference if they were allowed to cheat and we all look the other way?  How is this even pertinent to the issue at hand?

And I don't think it's because of Ohio State winning 75% of the time.  Apparently, Senor Faust is reely bad at the mathematology.  According to my records, the series stands at 12-14 against the Buckeyes.  14 out of 26 is about 54% if you round up.  Nowhere close to 75%.  And how many of those wins would you have had if you hadn't cheated to get recruits???!!!  Tainted wins each and every one.

As to the fan treatment part, I am not naive enough to think nothing bad ever happens at Penn State.  But not all fans share this view.  Here is an Iowa fan concluding Beaver Stadium is a "nice place to be."  But I am sure you can find others that are not ringing endorsements of the Penn State experience.

All the same, I'm surprised that Dick is so positive that no Penn State fans have ever had a bad experience at The Shoe.  In a review of experiences at Ohio Stadium, here are some comments:
[Texas] One item that should be mentioned at the outset -- Ohio State has the absolute worst fans in the entire country. Terms like obnoxious and sophomoric cannot provide justice as descriptions for these overly aggressive individuals.
[THEM] it wasn't the loss that made me sick, but the way osu fans treated our team and the fans. spitting on our players? booing our band? punching player's moms as they walked past? really?

i take my college football seriously. but assaulting people? inexcusable. show a little class.

[Illinois] A friend from OSU got me the ticket. I wore my Illinois gear, as any good fan should. I wasn't being annoying, but I was clearly getting extremely excited as our team marched to victory over the "mighty" buckeyes. The crowd (which, around me, consisted mostly of locals, not students) literally threatened my life on multiple occasions.

I expected to get heckled (frankly, I'd be disappointed if I wasn't), but the physical threats were unnecessary. Three people literally surrounded me and told me if I clapped one more time that they would "beat the shit out of me."

The great Ohio Stadium, home to a bunch of sore losers.
I could go on, but you get the point.  Every fanbase has their unsavory characters.  Your proximity to these people at any given game will color your perception about that stadium and fan base.

But in Dick's mind, Ohio State fans are all angels, and we Pennsylvanian's are just classeless rubes that love to see their program collapse.  The world is not only scarlet & gray, but apparently black and white.  All or none.  His way or the highway.

And that is why he will never get it.

I just wish he'd keep his trash in Ohio.

Say Goodnight, Dick

Good night DICK FOUST.  Your team lost.

The Mighty Pryors of Columbus, anointed #1 for exactly one week, fell to the Badgers in Madison, Wisconsin tonight.  Terrell Pryor sealed the deal with a fine interception.  I loved every minute of it.

And to think I didn't think it could get any better after THEM lost and the Pittsburgh Penguins won.  But then it did.

In the Big Ten:

Did I mention that Wisconsin upset the Buckeyes 31-18?

Michigan State defeated Illinois 26-6.  They are 7-0 for the first time since 1966.

Iowa beat THEM in Ann Arbor before a record crowd of disappointed fans, 38-28.

Purdue beat the Gophers 28-17.

The Hoosiers outlasted Arkansas State 36-34.

In other games:

Nebraska fell to Texas 20-13.

South Carolina fell to Kentucky 31-28.  It is the first time Spurrier lost to Kentucky in his career.

Sleep well, DICK.  You deserve it.

Coffee Anyone?

Twice in one day.  I must really be special . . .
I've heard that you've been named PSU poster boy[typical nit fan] because of your filthy, garbage mouth, language, etc. Bet your family, friends, clients, etc. are equally proud of you, getting wacked, losing your column in pennlive & all for such childish, boorish, behavior. I'll still meet you for coffee this spring when I visit Lewisburg if you like, just in case you have something to say to me. Would dearly love to meet you Toddy.

Brutus

The Beat(ing) Goes On

Things must be pretty boring in Dick's world:
Since the buckeyes beat the nits 75% of the time, your basketball team 'REALLY' sucks, forget baseball I have an idea Toddy. Take your girls volleyball team, only thing you have to boast about, & let them play mens basketball, I think they would do better for sure. Of course they'd have to wear skirts which is what the boys should be wearing so no big deal. Hey Toddy, how come the Paterno the ultimate phony refuses to play Pitt? Only state where the two top teams[div 1] do not play each other. I know the answer, Joe is afraid to play them especially last couple yrs, they'd whup ya real good & you know it, Non-conf chumps & lower tier big ten teams is what he chooses. B4 big ten entry it was east coast chumps with an occasional good tem thrown in. What phonys, can't wait till you play Alabama Toddy, can you?

Still Monologuing

Or stalking as one of my readers commented.

I received no response from my "buddy" Dick Foust after I published the Buckeye Monologues, a series of emails from this guy after a brief exchange got me fired from PennLive.

Apparently, he either hasn't read it, or doesn't care.

Hi Doc,

Ya miss me, have'nt talked to ya lately, & I do sorta miss your filthy garbage mouth a lil bit. Just ain't the same anymore since you got wacked. Did ya watch the Buckeyes destroy the gophers today? Don't ya wish that could be the nits? But someone has to be the cellar dweller, may as well be your chitty nits. Can't wait till football season starts so we can kick your butt one more time, cause as you know your turn only comes once every 4-5 yrs, law of averages ya know. Ya mite well see us in nat title game coming year, so be prepared to look & wish one more time doctor do-little. Hope you're having a nice winter. Ta-Ta!
