The Nittans Who Say Ny

Head Knight: The Nittans Who Say Ny demand a sacrifice!

King JoePa: Nittans of Ny, we are but simple travelers who seek the enchanter who lives beyond these woods--

Nittans who say Ny: WE ARE PENN STATE!

King JoePa: Oh, ow!

Head Knight: We shall say " WE ARE PENN STATE! " again to you, if you do not appease us.

King JoePa: Well, what do you want?

Head Knight: We want a shrubbery!!

 Later . . .
King JoePa: We are looking for a shrubbery...

ISU: Aggh! No! Never! We have no shrubberies here.  We are TREES!

King JoePa: If you do not tell us where we can buy a shrubbery, my friends and I will say... we will say... 'We are Penn State!'.

ISU: Agh! Do your worst!

King JoePa: Very well! If you will not assist us voluntarily,... 'We are Penn State!

ISU: No! Never! No shrubberies!

King JoePa: 'We are Penn State! '

ISU: [cough]

CURLEY THE SHRUBBER: Are you saying 'We are Penn State!' to that old tree?

King JoePa: Erm, yes.

CURLEY: Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can 'We are Penn State!' at will to old trees. There is a pestilence upon this land. Nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies and football schedules are under considerable economic stress at this period in history.

King JoePa: Did you say 'shrubberies'? AND football schedules?

CURLEY: Yes. Shrubberies are my trade. I am a shrubber. My name is CURLEY the Shrubber. I arrange, design, and sell shrubberies and football schedules.  I decorate cupcakes too.

We Are Lumberjacks and We're Okay

Penn State opened its 125th Season of football against the Mighty Sycamores of Indiana State.  One kick.  One man--Chaz Powell.  95 yard return.  Cha-pow!

And just like that, Indiana State was uprooted and never had a chance.  They did attempt a 42-yard field goal early in the second quarter which would have made it a 14-3 game, but the kick was wide right and the Sycamores did not score until 2:15 left in the fourth quarter against the Penn State back-ups.

The weather was great--perhaps too great.  But my new seats were under the North Upper Deck, so at least I watched the game in the shade.  The view is approximately the same view I had before I was ousted from SK, but from nearly the opposite side of the stadium.

I had the opportunity to meet fellow blogger and Penn State fan Carolyn Todd before the game at our tailgate.  Her husband Terry has now attended 258 STRAIGHT PSU football games.  Carolyn herself is on a streak of 122 games.  They are great people and I hope to see them again some time.  You can read her take on the game at View From The Stands.

Other than the fact that I have to walk more than halfway around the stadium to get to our seats, I really like where we ended up.  Of course, looking out at all the empty seats and knowing that the University has not sold out the season tickets, I am more than a little disappointed in the STEP program.  But I suppose it is making money, and that's what really matters, right?

Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot you can say about this game. It was really nothing more than a glorified scrimmage, and truth be told, we probably faced stiffer competition in the blue-white game, than we did this past Saturday.

Going into the game, I wondered if we would even hear Zombie Nation being played.  That question was answered on the opening kick-off.  Sweet Caroline debuted at the 8:20 mark.

What?  You want me to actually talk about the GAME?

It was a game of ups and downs.  You can lurk on any message board in Nittany Nation if you want to debate which quarterback did better and who should be starting next week.  I don't really know.  I think Bolden is probably the better athlete, but both quarterbacks had trouble with the Indiana State pressure, and that makes me worry about our offensive line more than the quarterbacks.

Obviously, the O-line has shown some improvement, at least in the running game.  Or maybe that is because of Redd and Beachum.  The full backs had a busy day.

Overall, the play calling was very conservative.  We did throw downfield a little bit, and perhaps the receivers should have caught some balls that would have made Bolden's stats look better.

I give Indiana State credit for not giving up and fighting to the end.  They really did put themselves in an emotional and score board hole with that opening kick-off return.

Our special teams are concerning.  We missed two field goals and a PAT.  A couple of kicks looked like my golf shots off the tee.  The loss of Fera could be huge.  And while we didn't give up any big returns, we did not pin ISU deep on kick-offs or punts.

But I am reluctant to translate this performance into a prediction for the rest of the season, much the same way as you can't predict the success of a team based on the blue-white scrimmage.  I like the fact that the team came out fired up and rode the opening kick-off return momentum to a 14 point lead quickly.  But the excitement can only last so long against an inferior opponent, and we fell into some sloppy play before taking a comfortable 28-0 lead into the half.

Quite frankly, I had trouble keeping focused on the game.  I'm sure the players felt the same ennui.  Against better competition, I hope the focus will stay better.

It has to, or this will be a long season.

BY THE NUMBERS:

I noted in RED the areas which seem to stick out.  we outgained them just as you would expect.  Should we have had more yards?  More points?  Perhaps.  But you got the sense that there was no urgency after the opening scores.  Don't equate lack of production with an inability to produce.

The defense played a solid game.  Most of those 8 first downs were in the fourth quarter.

I am concerned with the number of sacks we gave up, and the kick stats as noted above.  I shudder to think how things will be next week if we can't keep Alabama around or inside the twenty on kick-offs--assuming we kick off much next week.

INTANGIBLES:

The Drum Major stuck both flips.

Penn State won the toss and received.

Official attendance was 96,461.  Kudos to those fans who came to this level of opponent.

THE BIG (TEN) PICTURE:

Only Minnesota and Indiana failed to win their opening games.

Nebraska beat Chattanooga 40-7.
Ohio State knocked off Akron 42-0.
THEM beat Western Michigan 34-10.
Illinois topped Arkansas State 33-15.
Northwestern edged BC 24-17.
Purdue survived against Middle Tennessee State 27-24.
Iowa defeated Tenn Tech 34-7.
Wisconsin beat UNLV 51-17.
MSU beat YSU 28-6.
The Hoosiers lost to Ball State 27-20.
The Gophers lost to USC 19-17.

SHEDDING TEARS:

1.  ND--over-rated again, the Irish lost to South Florida.  God tried to stop the game twice with lightning, but even that couldn't help.
2.  Oregon--thanks for playing.
3.  TCU--ditto, and what a heart-wrenching loss after being down 47-23 to come back only to lose in the last 64 seconds on a FG, 50-48!
4.  Georgia--lost to Boise State, but man, those Broncos are good.
5.  Utah State--almost upset the defending National Chumps, but allowed Tigers to score with 30 seconds left to shatter the glass slipper, losing 42-38.
6.  Oregon State--Beavers were App Stated by Sacramento State 29-28 in OT.

LOOKING AHEAD:

This is the Big One, Elizabeth.  And Redd (Silas, not Redd Foxx) better have a great game.

Alabama is struggling at the QB position at the moment.  I'm not going to argue about who has the better D.  The stats suggest Bama does and let's let it at that.  I think I saw the Tide opened as a 10 point favorite.

Penn State must be able to maintain field position.  Force the Tide to go the distance to score on you.  Minimize turn overs and hopefully create a couple.  Both Bama Qbs threw 2 INTs against Kent State.  Penn State needs to shut down the run and force them to pass, if they are going to have a chance in this game.  The crowd needs to do its part to upset the rhythm of these young quarterbacks.  It would be really helpful if we could score quickly.

The game is set for 3:30.  It will be a WHITEHOUSE GAME.  Wear white!

Forrest Thump?

For the most part, the slogans for the Citizen's Bank Buttons are pretty good.

And then there was this week's button.

FORREST THUMP.

I get the slogan.  It's a take on Forrest Gump.  The Sycamores are "the trees."  Trees make up a forest.  Forest = Forrest.  We're going to thump them on the field, or when the trees fall, they make a thump.  Hence, Forrest Thump.

But after having to explain this several times this week, I realized that sometimes you can get too cutesy and cerebral with the slogans.

Maybe Sic 'em Some More?

One of My Favorite Years--for Football AND buttons!

Live From Madison . . .It's Thursday Night!

It's Thursday night.

Normally that means choosing between Big Bang Theory and Pitt football.  I really like Big Bang Theory.  Of course, there's also Steeler's Football!

But this Thursday brings new blood to Thursday night as the Wisconsin Badgers (favored by 35) are getting set to play UNLV.  I gotta go with da badgers on dis one.

Other games of practically no interest include Miss State (30 points) over Memphis, Syracuse (6) over Wake Forest, Idaho (6.5) over Bowling Green, FIU (14) over North Texas, and Kentucky (18) over Western Kentucky.

Friday features a match-up between TCU (4.5) and Baylor.

For the weekend, the Buckeyes are heavily favored (33.5) over Akron, despite it seeming like most of the team has been suspended.  The Irish (10.5) are favored over South Florida.  THEM (14) plays Western Michigan.  Alabama (38) opens with Kent State.  And in the interesting game of the week, Boise State is a 3 point favorite over Georgia.  LSU and Oregon (3), both in the Top 5, battle it out in Texas.

I realized two things as I finished my countdown of the season.  First, and foremost, I'm suddenly excited about this season.  Two months ago--not so much.  Perhaps time has helped heal the wounds inflicted by that painful bowl game.  Perhaps I have drank enough Kool Aid to convince me this will be a great season.  Perhaps I just can't help myself.

The second thing I realized is that I have not posted an official prediction for the season.  Two months ago I was thinking 8-4 with a 6-6 being possible.

Well cut my hair with a weed whacker and call me Ishmael, but I'm thinking 10-2 now, with 8-4 being on the side of worst case scenarios.

Two losses--likely Bama and Wisconsin--and a probable BCS bowl.  Depending on the Big Ten picture, that might might include a trip to the first Big Ten Championship if the Badgers stumble a couple of times along the way.

NittanyNole of the BWI messageboard wrote that ESPN analyst Robert Smith has the Lions pegged as a dark horse to win the Big Ten.

And if we beat Bama next week . . . . look out.  This team could make things happen.

Of course, we have to cut some trees first.  A little firewood for when the season gets cold.

Here's what some of the Sycamores are rattling their leaves and saying:
DGreenwell3:
Wow. People don't even mention our qb puts there's to shame lol..
Indy Tree Fan:
If anyone on their staff spends one second game planning for us, they should be fired. They should just prepare for Alabama for two weeks. We're nothing but a scrimmage - heck, we're not even that. Just forget about little 'ol ISU. Matter of fact, I hope the entire PSU teams has a big party the night before. They can beat us even with their hangovers...

I don't know if we can win, but can anyone say "trap" game??? Set it up, boys!!!

ROLL TIMBER!
Fridae00:
Go Blue, Fear the rolling timber!!!!!!!!
Or hey Penn State, don't fear them, then fall like Golieth. [or like Goliath]
BlueThunder:
I'm shocked that we are 37 point underdogs if for no other reason than the fact that Penn State's offense sucked last year and I can't remember too many games last year that they even scored 37 total points for the game. The last few years they have won with their defense and running game. Do they even know who their starting quarterback will be?
Roll timber?  Seriously?
So which Penn State player do you think will be dubbed, "chainsaw?"

Pre-season Countdown: #12

Each year, I try to put together a countdown of the Penn State season, starting with the game we are most likely to win (the easiest opponent) at #12 and ending with the game we are most likely to lose (the most difficult opponent) at #1.

As is the case most seasons, the #12 game is not a highly disputed spot.  The nominees for #12 are Indiana State, Temple, Eastern Michigan, Indiana and Alabama.  Okay, I'm just kidding about Alabama.

And the winner is . . .

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY.
The Sycamore Defense--good for blocking field goals; not much else

Unfortunately for the Mighty Sycamores, this game will be played on grass and not inside the Bryce Jordan Center.

When this game was first scheduled, the Sycamores had won just one game in four seasons.  They doubled their wins to two games in five seasons, and last year, they had their first winning season (6-5) since 1996.

The Sycamores have been to three bowl games all-time, the Shrine Bowl in 1949, and the Pecan Bowl in 1983-4.  They have never won a bowl game.  In the championship subdivision, they have made it to the play-offs twice (1983/4) with an overall record of 1-3.  Not much to cheer about since the early eighties.

Not only are we playing a team not in the Bowl Subdivision, but we are playing one of the worst teams in the Championship Subdivision.

Can ISU build on that winning season of 2010?

The answer really has no bearing on whether Penn State will win this game or not.  Seriously, this is not Appalachian State we are discussing here.  Even if the Sycamores ARE better than a year ago, or any other season this past decade, they will not be able to defeat Penn State.

Don't Holy Toledo me here.  This is not the Penn State team of 2000, and this Sycamore team is not the Toledo team that went to a bowl game in 2000.

Penn State has never lost to an FCS level team and this will not be the first.

So do you even need to watch this game?  No.  But you should nonetheless.

The excitement of this game will be to see who has won the starting QB job.  That's it.  Nothing else to see here.  The game should be over by halftime and the stadium will never be full.  The game itself will be plain vanilla.  There is no way Paterno is going to show Saban anything on tape that will be remotely useful for the next week.

I'm not sure I agree with that theory completely.  It might be nice to show something just to make them worry about things, but not the enough to know our entire gameplan.  I type this as if other teams DON'T KNOW our gameplan!  I sometimes wonder if WE know our gameplan.  Further, whichever QB is selected, he needs some quality reps.  Just dinking the ball to the sideline and handing off will be enough to win this game, but not enough to prepare for the Bama defense.

On the other hand, whichever QB is selected, that person likely sees better competition week in and week out in practice against our own defense, than anything he will face from ISU.

This game isn't even worth the bandwidth to discuss X's and O's.  So let's discuss their mascot.

Originally, ISU was a teacher's college, but the fighting teachers apparently didn't make opponents shake in their cleats like the mighty Sycamore.  Thus was born the Fighting Trees with a Tree mascot.
A tree named Woody????

In 1969, or thereabouts because who really cares outside of Terre Haute, Indiana, they voted Chief Quabachi (cookin' on his Hibachi) as their mascot.

Unfortunately, the University bent to PC pressure and ditched the Indian Chief for no mascot at all.  But in 1995, Sycamore Sam was born.  They didn't win a game that year.  You do the math.  Sam is a woodland animal, like a fox, but not a fox.  Whatever.

How Low Can We Go?

It was announced this week that Penn State has added Indiana State to the football schedule in 2011, a week before playing the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Indiana State will cash a school-record paycheck of $450,000 for a trip to Happy Valley on Sept. 3, 2011. This craptastic match-up will serve as a tune-up for Penn State's battle with Alabama the following week, but who are we to argue with success? The man responsible, Tim Curley, was named Athletic Director of the Year in Northeast Region for 2008-09.

Normally, I am a defender of Penn State's scheduling because I understand the economics behind the situation. As a fan, I may not always agree with it, but I get the big picture.

What I don't get is scheduling Indiana State. Why? For the love of all that is blue and white, why would we schedule this. . . this . . .well, let's face it, calling them a team is being generous.

Coastal Carolina lost to Appalachian State in the playoffs in 2006. Youngstown State has won National Titles in 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1997.

But what has Indiana State done?

The Mighty Sycamores went 0-12 last year with losses to Illinois State (57-6), Eastern Michigan (52-0), Western Illinois (56-0) and South Dakota State (49-9). Note that these games weren't even close. They were outscored 508-101, and Eastern Michigan was likely their toughest opponent.

In 2007, they went 0-11, coming up short in a 13-10 loss to Southeast Missouri State.

In 2006, they actually won a game, finishing the season 1-10. The lone win was a 28-22 drubbing of Missouri State.

In case you are wondering, they went 0-11 in 2005. That's a total of 1-44 in FOUR YEARS.

So not only are we playing a team from a lower division, but we are playing one of the WORST teams in that division. If you planted a Sycamore tree on the fifty yard line, it would have a better chance of winning a game than this team. Heck, if you planted a sycamore tree at the goal line, at least there would be a defender. Sooner or later some showboater would accidentally run into the tree, and hopefully cough up the football.

Sometimes when you schedule a team--like Syracuse--you don't know know how bad they'll be. Hello, McFly! This team ain't looking any better for 2011, although if they win one game, they will be better, so it all depends on how you look at it. They are 13-57 since 2002. Bad is just an adjective--and they are bad.

It's an outrage. Couldn't a school like Penn State find a better opponent? Aren't there MAC teams that would be willing to take a $450,000 paycheck home? I'd even take Pitt, but they won't accept without a return trip to Pittsburgh.

Playing Indiana State doesn't even help recruiting. We already play Indiana and Purdue. Geographically, this game is worthless. Coastal Carolina and Youngstown offer better recruiting grounds.

I'd rather see us play Akron twice in the same season. Or Temple. Are both William AND Mary busy that weekend? Craptastic--a great adjective--doesn't really do justice to this injustice. This is not a cupcake--this is what cupcakes eat. Indiana State . . . the Breakfast of Cupcakes!

This is simply inexcusable. I can handle playing inferior opponents to pay the bills, but I cannot accept playing a team that is inferior to inferior opponents, when there have to be other options available.
